Week 1 - wood shavings everywhere

The first week is over for 2012. Everybody still holding on to their resolutions? One of mine is to get a hobby (for my nonexistent free time) that has nothing to do with writing or reading. I have tried ...
crochet, and wood carving, which I like even better. But I can't exactly do it while in line at the motor vehicles department, not like people can crochet. Can you imagine? Wood shavings everywhere. Or at the airport? TSA confiscating my chisels.

Book news: My recommendations are up for the best gay romance novels I read in December:

Top Pick - Death by Misfortune by AM Riley.
Recommended Reads -
Counterpoint Dylan's Story by Ruth Sims,
The French Have a Word for It by Josh Lanyon,
The Soldier's Tale (Book 2, Fitzwarren Inheiritance series) by RJ Scott,
Sucks and Blows by Storm Grant.

As of January 4, you can see the detailed reviews on the All Romance Ebooks Cafe archives recommended reads page.

Author news: Tamara Allen is named Author of the Year for 2011 at Speak Its Name gay historical fiction review blog. This year (make that "last year"), I loved her story
If It Ain't Love
, which was my top pick at All Romance Ebooks for September 2011. Also, Jordan Castillo Price has GhosTV named Best Paranormal by the members of the M/M Romance group at Goodreads.com. I highly recommend it, and it was my top pick for All Romance Ebooks for April 2011.

Writing news: I published my fourth nonfiction to Amazon, How to Write Sexy Descriptions and Sex Scenes. Also, I've posted an excerpt of my upcoming fiction, Fall Into the Sun: (the first 2000 words)

Chris, you're awesome! Except for you, I never get comments anymore. :)

Possibly I need a 12-step program...

Knit-a-holics? Or Blog Readers Anonymous? ;)

Chris said...

Blog commenters anonymous! :D

Val Kovalin said...

Ha, ha! I don't think you can be anonymous, Chris, because you're the only one who ever does it! Remember that ratio of 100 writers to every reader? All of us are going to start posting with you in mind. :D

Well, I couldn't really complain about that, could I? :D

No, not at all. You'd be of utmost value to all 100 of us! Economics 101 - scarcity increases demand!

I'm here. :-) Like the grey blue color.

Yeah, I can see wood carving would be a tad limiting. Maybe some day I'll get another hobby. Or not. :-)

Tam! Squeeeee! Another comment.

For the wood carving, I've thought about carrying around a purse to catch the wood dust. Probably the only reason I'd ever carry a purse. ;)

Thanks, Val! I like your new site. It's so sleek and welcoming.

How about whittling? Or is that the same thing?

Val Kovalin said...

Mara! It's great to see you here! Thank you. It turned out looking better than I'd thought ... the minimalist, brightly lit look. Easy on the eyes. :D

You know, I think whittling might be the same thing. I tend to think of carving as blocks of wood and whittling as twigs and little pieces of scrap wood, but, honestly, none of my carvings are bigger than about four inches high!

I picture carving as demanding more concentration and time than whittling. You going to post photos of your finished pieces?

Val Kovalin said...

I see what you mean! Carving has a more serious sound, and whittling sounds casual. I'm not sure about posting those photos. Ha, ha! Right now, my little figurines have heads that look too big for their bodies. Maybe I'll post something abstract like chip carving.
